Recently we have attended a Middle School Track Meet and partook in the cleaning up of trash and food that had been left in the bleachers after the event had ended. We feel that in doing this small task that took no more than forty five minutes could change lives, attitudes, and the community could become a positive place instead of having all the negativity that we have just feet around us. We are hoping that throughout the rest of the spring and summer that once fall rolls around this committee will be larger and have many more people and pictures taken and posted.

STEM Students Create Winning Invention
The article I read today was about a group of students that were creating a wind-powered generator that won at the state competition. The group of students were from Streamwood Illinois, they were interested in creating something that produced little light, so they came up with a wind-powered generator. The idea of the wind-powered generator won the state competition in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. This idea encourages the teachers and the students of the school to solve real-world problems though using the STEM tools in the classrooms. There were 16 students involved in this project. These students will be competing during the spring for the ten national finalists spots and the ultimate prize is up to $200,000. These students I am sure, they are beyond excited. They have to be chomping at the bit to make everything they can better to enhance the project that they have already started. If I were them, I would make it the best generator every just because of the prize and the good it would do for the ecosystem. In this article written by John Cloud he asks questions like is it a natural born thing that people are geniuses or is it something that can only be learned? He gives examples of things to make a point as well as explaining things that authors sometimes think are true so they include it in their writings. Most of the time things that authors think to be true are not always true. Throughout his article he talks about many things and almost all of those things provide evidence to help the read to determine if being a genius is born or if it is something that you have to learn. Some conclusions that Cloud has reached are things like scores on IQ's and other evidence that other authors or writers have given in their books or stories they have written. One conclusion that I came across and might have mentioned earlier was the example of the IQ's. He was talking about how not all IQ's scores are the same and that might have had something to do with proving a point with are genius' natural born or is it something that needs to be learned. I could apply this information from in the article to my genius hour page simply by thinking through everything I read throughout it while I am working on getting my genius hour project rolling. I think that some people are genius' but others are not naturally born genius' and so those are the people that have to learn the roll of being a genius.
With Mr. Cowens information and presentation I now have a better understanding on how to better present my genius hour project. I think that the delivery of the presentation that Mr. Cowen's presentation showed me that using a powerpoint and props will make the presentation better and easier to understand or comprehend. I think that the organization of the presentation was way better than I ever exxpected, simply because I was not expecting a 3-D printer to be as interesting as it really was.
This week I read an article that focused on genuineness and the word genius. The article I read was mainly about recognizing common thinking strategies that are creative. The article taught me that the more you think about something the better your writing or whatever you are doing will be. This teaches people how to think instead of teaching them what to think. I will try to use some of these unique thinking strategies while I am working on making my page better!
I learned many things throughout this article, but the one that stood out most to me is that there are schools all around the world that are involved in this “Genius Hour Project.” Students just like you and I are given hour or one class period a week to work on a self inspired project. I learned that failure is alright, because you can always try again to make something better. Genius Hour is a self or group project that can make learning a little easier in some ways. Put it this way, I am not someone who is known to just open a book and start reading, I am the student that hates to read, but with genius hour reading is okay for me to do. I learned that by reading I can find more information to make my project ten times better. This article was talking all about how genius hour is not a project chosen by the teacher, it is chosen by the students. Genius hour can make students dreams come true. In September and October I accomplished setting up backgrounds and fonts for my page. I have also been working on the about me page and how to contact me if people are interested in helping after sporting events. Throughout the rest of October, November, and December I will continue to add information about dates we need help and other solid information we have for you! This will help you to decipher through your plans in hopes that you can help us. I will continue to add blog posts, details, pictures, contact information, and updates for you and all of your friends who are willing to help out with this project! |
